Thesis

The roles of benthic algae as bioindicator to ecohealth in river ecosystems.

Description

Benthic algae are the primary producers in the stream ecosystem and have been widely used for ecohealth assessment on river ecosystems. The project intends to answer following questions: 1) Can spatial variation in algal assemblages be explained by landuse or other disturbances and over what spatial scale? 2) Is the pattern of spatial and temporal variation in algal assemblages similar to that of other indicators like macroinvertebrate, fish? and 3) In particular, is there any relationship between benthic algae assemblages and metabolism (i.e. gross primary productivity and/or respiration)?
