Reducing Impacts of Storm Water on Urban Streams in South East Queensland. Large and Small Scale Catchment and Riparian Issues

Description

I am investigating spatial scale issues of instream and catchment impacts on urban stream health. Urban streams currently only constitute a small percentage of streams in South East Queensland, but this percentage is increasing as development and population growth continue. Urban streams have value due to their potential to provide ecological services, community awareness and recreational space enhancement. Further efforts are required to better understand the distinction between the impacts of local riparian vegetation on stream health from the larger scale impact increasing impervious surface has on the hydrologic signature, and the issues of storm water piping connectivity to streams. Spatial scale and network analysis using existing data and field work provide exciting new avenues to investigate ways to better understand the multitude of land use factors affecting urban streams. GIS based modelling research is a promising, relatively new approach to stream ecology research in urban, rural and natural landscapes.
