The ecology and distribution of Moreton Bay’s deepwater algal reefs
Description
A series of deepwater rocky macroalgal reefs occur at water depths of between 20 and 60 meters off the east coast of Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands. Despite their location within the Moreton Bay Marine Park and proximity to important fisheries, their extent and algal, invertebrate and finfish assemblage structures are essentially unstudied. Understanding the ecological linkages of continental shelf habitats is important, both for fisheries management and marine biodiversity perspectives. To this end, a set of detailed investigations into the dynamics of these offshore habitats will inform future management decisions relating to Moreton Bay Marine Park and the understanding of the role of deepwater algal communities more generally.Supervisors
