Overview

The major aim of this program is to investigate the user and social dimension of information technology focusing on Information and Communication Technology skills development, information systems management, and gender and information technology issues in ICT education and work.

Specific projects have included the development and implementation of a medical information system that integrates, retrieves and interfaces with existing medical information systems. This research aims at identifying:

  • the individual, organisational, and societal needs;
  • understanding the management of systems and work practices;
  • dealing with structured and unstructured data;
  • handling privacy and security requirements of health care systems;
  • interface with existing and future system that gather medical evidence; and
  • evaluating devices for real life situations.

Australian Research Council linkage projects include the development of a design environment for expert systems development for stakeholders in rural industries (industry partner - Queensland Department of Primary Industries) and the development of an intelligent decision support system for the diagnosis of sleep disorders in the Australian population (industry partner - Queensland Health).

Research projects

Seek and Sign Project

This project aims to improve access for preliterate deaf children to Auslan signing resources on the internet, computer based software and mobile technologies, to assist these children and their families to learn signing. The project is also expected to enhance these children’s access to literacy and numeracy resources.

Australian ICT capability in the global market

The project building the Australian ICT capability in the global market investigates the influence of Information and Communication Technology on competitiveness of the Australian industry nationally. The research project will identify skill sets needed for effective utilisation of ICT and look at how organizations can achieve better alignment between business processes and ICT.

Women in Information Technology

The Women in Information Technology project explores the perceptions and attitudes of women in high school, undergraduate and postgraduate university study and in the work place, and attempts to understand the factors which influence these females to take up and remain in an IT career. The lack of female participation in Information Technology education and professional work is a challenging and constant issue. This issue is now a well-documented research area, but the causes and remedies remain puzzling and complex.
