Research expertise
Associate Professor Guan obtained a PhD in Structural Mechanics in 1997 from Griffith for which she developed a specialist non-linear layered finite element method (LFEM) for cracking and punching shear failure analysis of reinforced concrete flat plate systems. Her study has helped to provide an advanced and definitive solution to the complex design problems posed by this important class of modern concrete structures. Her work in the broad area of concrete structures will also help eliminate the restrictions and inconsistencies of the current national and international design codes and refine alternative empirical and analytical techniques
Her main research areas are structural engineering and computational mechanics with special interests in finite element modelling and failure analysis of concrete structures, application of finite element method in dental implant research, bridge deterioration modelling and structural topology optimisation. She has co-authored one edited conference proceedings and over 120 refereed journal and conference papers.
To date, personal research grants from competitive sources including the Australian Research Council total over AUD800,000 mainly in the areas of computational modelling and analysis of concrete structures, structural optimisation, computational biomechanics on dental implant, and Bridge Management System.
