Higher degrees research (Masters and PhD) and Honours students play an important role in the research efforts of the Griffith Institute for Educational Research. Student projects are closely aligned with the Institute's primary research programs.

The Finishing School
Currently we have 8 regular members who meet weekly at the State Library and constitute The Finishing School. Having met originally at a writing retreat we imported the skills and structures offered to us through the facilitation of the retreat and employ these on a weekly basis to encourage, develop and support our writing. All members are in the final stages of their PhD journey, we find there is a great deal of support that comes from the easy familiarity with each other around the specific issues that face a candidate at this time. We also have an online collaboration using the facility Drop Box where we can exchange pieces of writing for critique. The key benefit is that we are all focused on completion and are supporting each other at a time when formal group support is not offered by the University. Our ambition, once we have all completed our first draft, is to raise funds and organise another retreat where we can work on our writing, ever moving ourselves closer to competition and eventually submission. This model has been so successful at progressing our writing and moving us to our goal we feel it could be replicated and provide similar support for students in other Schools and Faculties.
