Associate Professor Rod Gardner
Associate Professor Rod Gardner has a background in Conversation Analysis and Applied Linguistics. He is currently investigating language use in Indigenous classrooms of Preps and Year Ones, focusing on knowledge transfer between teachers and students. Other recent research has included the analysis of Indigenous conversation and of conversations involving second language speakers, as well as multitasking whilst working on computers.
Courses he teaches in the Postgraduate coursework in TESOL/Applied Linguistics are an introduction to Conversation Analysis and classroom discourse and learning through interaction. He supervises a range of HDR students mostly in the area of TESOL.
Dr Peter Grainger
Dr Peter Grainger has two major disciplines, Applied Linguistics and Assessment in Education. He has published in peer reviewed international journals on assessment, curriculum design and Japanese language learning. He has been involved in various significant language curriculum and assessment design projects during that time, including a national project to develop curriculum guide lines for Japanese and a government project to retrain teachers to become Japanese teachers. He recently completed a PhD related to language learning strategies for JFL learners in Australia. Peter worked for the Queensland Studies Authority as a Principal Project Officer, coordinating major projects in Languages and Middle School Assessment.
Dr Minglin Li
Dr Minglin Li is an applied linguist who teaches in the area of TESOL, focusing on English linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and research methodology and contemporary issues in TESOL. Her research interests centre around pre-service and in-service TESOL teacher education, English as a Second/Foreign Language education including language education policy and planning as it relates to TESOL. She is also interested in TESOL pedagogy and TESOL curriculum studies.
Dr Indika Liyanage
Dr Indika Liyanage has a background in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. His research interests are in second language teacher education with particular emphases on professional development and contextually responsive pedagogic applications of language teachers. Other research foci include second language acquisition, language learning strategies and learning strategy based second/foreign language instruction.
He teaches Second Language Acquisition and Text-Based Second Language Teaching and Learning in Griffith’s postgraduate coursework programs in Applied Linguistics/TESOL. He also supervises a range of doctoral and master’s theses in Applied Linguistics/TESOL.
Dr Kerry Taylor-Leech
Dr Kerry Taylor-Leech is a lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Coming from a teaching background, she has taught in secondary schools, adult migrant education and higher education in the UK, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Kerry’s research explores the intersections between language policy, development, identity, education and literacy in multilingual contexts. She also researches the relationship between language and settlement for adult immigrants. In addition, she has an ongoing interest in the teaching and learning of languages. Kerry teaches Sociolinguistics and Linguistics in Griffith’s postgraduate coursework programs and supervises doctoral and master’s students in Applied Linguistics/TESOL.
