Griffith Law Review

Volume (2013) 22(2) - Call for Manuscripts

  • General Manuscripts Deadline: Extended to 31 May 2013

Volume (2013) 22(3) - Symposium: Emerging Mechanisms of Legislative and Political Power in Response to Irregular Migration

  • Symposium Manuscripts Deadline: 16 August 2013

Symposium Editors: Willem de Lint, Marinella Marmo and Maria Giannacopoulos

The movement of populations across geopolitical spaces is an increasingly vexed question of law, politics and culture, and the control of borders elicits strong political debates. Within these debates, forms of migration that challenge traditional and conventional ways of entry controlled by the sovereign state (‘irregular migration’) is a topic that provokes strong public reaction and feeds the policy profile of political parties. The contested nature of irregular migration means that official policy responses are often reactive: based on a political construction of the migration problem as a highly visible security crisis.

This symposium seeks to challenge this representation of irregular migration and reframe the debate by adopting a comparative and interdisciplinary approach. By comparing the European and Asia-Pacific regions, with specific emphasis on Australia and Italy, this symposium seeks to contribute to an informed debate towards more effective and balanced migration policy. Comparative analysis of regulatory regimes and social, political and legal discourses on the control of peoples into and out of sovereign territories promises to produce fresh insights into this phenomenon.

Open Space

The Griffith Law Review is developing a new section called Open Space, which will showcase alternative pieces, such as interviews, reports on conferences attended, creative works, photo essays and more. It is meant to provide a forum within the journal for engaging with cutting edge non-traditional legal inquiry in keeping with the journal’s focus on interdisciplinary, socio-legal, theoretical and critical legal scholarship.

Contributions will be reviewed by our Academic Editors. Our first feature will be William P. Macneil’s 2012 interview with psychoanalytic legal philosopher Renata Salecl. Ideas or suggestions for future Open Spaces are welcome.
