Australia Research Council PhD scholarship: Homelessness, Offending and Mental Health
A three year PhD scholarship is available to research the relationship among homelessness, offending and mental health. There has been an increase in people experiencing mental illness within the justice system. A key factor is homelessness, with many homeless people suffering severe mental health issues and being at increased risk of involvement with the criminal justice system. This project is part of a larger Australia Research Council funded project Understanding the relationship between mental illness and offending: Implications for crime prevention and the management of mentally ill offenders.
The project partners with Queensland Health, Department of Communities, Department of Premier and Cabinet, Queensland Police service, Office of Economic and Statistical Research, Department of Justice and Attorney General and the University of Queensland. The scholarship is open to students with a background in the social sciences including criminology, psychology, public health or other related fields.
Availability
This scholarship is offered once only to one person. Open for applications from December 1, 2011 until the end of February, 2012.
Payment
The value of this scholarship is $AUD27651 (per annum). This award is to be used for living expenses. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of 3 years.
Research Information
This scholarship is for one of the following fields of research: Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts – General, Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences or Criminology. It is required that your study starts no earlier than March 1, 2012 and no later than June 1, 2012.
Eligibility
This scholarship is for study in Australia for those who have achieved Honours 1 or equivalent, Honours 2a or equivalent, or Masters or equivalent.

The project will establish what prison quality factors are for female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners in West Australian and Northern Territory prisons. Only Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents are eligible.

Police Use of Force - Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security
$22,860 p.a. (3 years tax free) and a research allowance of up to $5,000
The Use of Force Project is part of the Frontline Policing program of research within the Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security. The project aims to enhance our knowledge of police use of force policies and practices in Australia. The project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field but also inform police training, national policies and guidelines. Both international and domestic applicants are welcome.
