The 2010 QCAL conference, Building your Future: Literacy and Numeracy as Foundation Skills, will be held at the Mt Gravatt campus of Griffith University from 12 pm Thursday 4 November to 5 pm Friday 5 November, 2010.
The issue of foundation skills is the key theme of the 2010 QCAL conference. In particular, the speakers will address topics such as foundational skills in training packages and in everyday living, what theoretical perspectives should guide facilitators in helping learners develop such skills and what processes best enable these learning processes. Recently, there have been a number of developments related to this issue which will have a direct impact on the fields of adult literacy and numeracy. These include:
- the Skills Australia report, Australian Workforce Futures, which focused on the effects on productivity of the lack of foundation skills, that is, language, literacy and numeracy;
- the Australian Industries Group report on employers’ views on workplace literacy and numeracy skills, and
- a consultation paper Briefing on Foundation Skills which has been produced for The National VET Equity Advisory Council which will provide high level advice to the Ministerial Council for Tertiary Education and Employment.
In order to understand more about these developments and their implications for adult literacy and numeracy practitioners and policy makers, the QCAL conference committee has invited a number of keynote speakers to address the conference.
