Scientist in lab2On behalf of the Organising Committee for the 2010 Gold Coast Health and Medical Research Conference, I am pleased to announce the program for this year’s conference.

Armand Trousseau was right when he said that medicine is both an art and a science and can possibly never become totally separated from each other. Contemporary medicine involves the artful use of health science research, biomedical research, and medical technology to form research informed diagnosis and management of injury and disease. This year's conference will showcase research from all fields of biomedical and allied health and the artful employment this research in health care and disease management.

Keynote Speakers

Associate Professor Vivek Mittal
an internationally recognized cancer researcher and Director of the Lehman Brothers Lung Cancer Laboratory, Weill Cornell Medical College. His research area is in the regulation of cells “angiogenic switch” which is important in tumor progression.
Professor Michael Good
a world-leading medical researcher in the area of combating malaria and streptococcus A and a recent recipient of a prestigious Australia Fellowship, from the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Program Overview

The scientific program is designed around this years theme of “working together for better health” and will explore the many aspects of health care and health research.

The conference will also include symposium sessions, interactive poster sessions, workshops, mentoring sessions, and the regular poster presentations to show case health related research conducted within Griffith University. The social program will include wine tasting as well as a banquet and awards dinner on the Thursday evening with entertainment by Australian jazz singer Jessica Hitchcock.

Sydney artist Jessica Hitchcock is captivating. The young singer/songwriter transforms on stage with her strong, charismatic presence. With over 15 years musical experience, her performance is effortless and versatile. Mature beyond her years, Jessica is most comfortable on stage with her microphone and heels, echoing the powerful voices of Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James. From the solid foundations of Sydney's Conservatorium of Music to Graduating from the Talent Development Project in 2008, Jessica hasn't looked back.

Jess is a true professional having recently returned from New York where she worked with several Broadway composers and performed in different venues around Manhattan. Her musical understanding and intuition is outstanding and she has an amazing ability to connect with her audience in whatever style of singing she chooses including Jazz, Music Theatre and Opera. Recently returning from Melbourne where she premiered Australia's first indigenous opera 'Pecan Summer' written by Deborah Cheetham. A pleasure to work with, she fully commits to all her endeavours. Jessica Hitchcock was born to sing.

Registration & Abstracts

As in previous years, all accepted abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings. Similarly, as previously, financial support will be available to Health Group staff and RHD students to cover registration costs.

I hope you will submit your research to this year's Gold Coast Health and Medical Research Conference and join your colleagues at the Radisson Resort Gold Coast, December 2-3 in the collaborative exhibition of health related research.
