Brief Description/History

AMARAH is a non-profit organisation based in Brisbane, Australia that advocates for a better world. AMARAH is an acronym for Australian Muslim Advocates for the Rights of All Humanity. As the name suggests, AMARAH supports and encourages the positive engagement of Muslims on issues of concern for the whole of humanity.

The philosophical essence of AMARAH is derived from a number of central Islamic concepts:

  • khalifah (ambassadorship),
  • amanah (trust),
  • tawhid (unity of God), and
  • taqwa (God-consciousness).

Activities

The work of AMARAH is focused on five areas: Human Rights; Civil Rights; Social Reform; Environmental Responsibility; and Islamic Awareness.

AMARAH offers a variety of services, such as speakers for discussion forums and research papers.

In a nutshell AMARAH's interfaith work is not simply presenting at schools, churches, or at interfaith workshops/conferences. We also work on projects with members of other faiths or no faiths. So instead of merely saying what Islam says about the preservation and care of the environment we participate in local Clean Up Australia Day and Tree Planting Days around the community. Likewise during Ramadan, instead of talking about emphatising with the poor and hungry, we would rather help feed them.
