Leadership in action

Here are some different ways of raising students' awareness of leadership in action.

  1. Media, film and fiction
  2. Guest lecturers
  3. Ideal leader traits
  4. Weekly activities
  5. Other people's viewpoints

Other people's viewpoints

As a 'capstone' exercise, give your students the following hypothetical scenario and ask them to complete it as honestly as they can.

Get them to imagine that they have completed their current leadership term in ...............(a sports team, a debating team, a profit or non-profit organisation, club, society or service provider; representing students on university committees etc.).  At a farewell function, some people are invited to comment on their leadership achievements.  What sort of positive comments would they like to hear from:

  • their next-in-line leader (e.g., vice-president; vice-captain);
  • an academic staff member with whom they have worked;
  • a member of an associated local, state or national body to which their team/group belongs; and
  • a family member.
