Identity Program
Identity has long been a significant topic across various disciplines, such as politics, sociology, anthropology and the media. It has also emerged as a major debate in the popular media and in the literature on globalisation.
Identity is usually construed as multiple, competing and constructed. But notions of identity in the literature now encompass changing configurations across ethnic, religious, class, gender and other lines within nation-states and across national boundaries that are intensified by global migration and media. Some of these identity groups are undisciplined and unpredictable. A stark example in the Asia-Pacific region is Indonesia with its economic crises, separatist communities and rising Islamic activism.
The research group aims to bring together specialists for regular exchange about our research activities with a view to building on the synergies we identify through our meetings.
