The political role of the private business firm: A citizenship perspective
Monday 20 February, 2012, 6:00-7:30pm
South Bank Graduate Centre (S07), Room 1.23
South Bank campus, Griffith University
This open lecture featured Professor Dirk Matten from York University, Canada who holds the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility and is a professor of strategy at the Schulich School of Business. He has taught and conducted research at institutions around the world, winning numerous international awards for his publications including the Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award of the Academy of Management Conference and the Max Weber Award of the Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft for his bestselling textbook on business ethics. He was recently ranked among the ‘Top 100 CSR Leaders’ in an independent poll by CSR International.
In this lecture Professor Matten argued the assumption corporations have economic, legal and even social roles - but no political role or significance - is becoming increasingly untenable. Professor Matten proposed placing corporations within a citizenship framework is helpful for examining developments in business-society relations and opened up criteria for corporate power and responsibility against which corporations could be evaluated and be held accountable.
