Inter-cultural Encounters: A Web directory of German Missionary Endeavour in Queensland
John Oxley Library Reading Room, State Library of Queensland (level 4)
Thursday 25th June, 2009, 5.30pm for a 6.00pm
Event flyer (PDF 1.2M)
As Queenslanders celebrating our Sesquicentenary we reflect on a history of multi-layered cultural encounters. With a National Apology acknowledging the pain of Aboriginal child removals, and an end to the history wars, this is an opportune occasion to reassess the system of government and mission-run institutionalised reserves and dormitory-based education of Aboriginal children. Missionary endeavours had a significant foundational influence on the practical outcomes of state shaped colonial protection policies.
This project maps German missionary activity in Queensland. Indigenous recollections of these missionary endeavours are documented together with detailed insights into the personal background of the missionaries and their families, who propelled themselves into Herculean tasks for which they were poorly equipped, sparsely funded, and frequently criticised. The website explores the biographies and home institutions of missionaries to understand their aspirations and frustrations, and to portray the multi-layered cultural encounters that charted the course of mission communities.
The German Missionaries website will be live from 25th June, 2009.'Creative Communities: Sustainable Solutions for Social Inclusion' conference
